In CNC machining, the abbreviation of CNC means “computer numerical control.” CNC machines such as mills and lathes which carry out subtractive manufacturing processes using computer-aided design (CAD) software, which controls the automated fabrication equipment. After an operator prepares a CNC machine by affixing a workpiece, the programmed instructions will manipulate the tooling to create the part according to the design file’s specifications. CNC machines are compatible with a wide range of materials and create even highly complex parts quickly, efficiently, and uniformly for repeatable accuracy.
If you’ve ever wondered “What is CNC machining?”, the team at Tech-Way Industries, Inc. is here to help.
Tech-Way CNC Lathes & Mills and Their Uses
Tech-Way operates a full CNC machining department stocked with state-of-the-art technology. Our equipment includes three CNC lathes and eight CNC mills featuring 3- and 4-axis capabilities, some with bar stock feeders. We use this equipment to create custom molded inserts and machine high-tolerance areas on molded parts so that they’ll perform as desired. Our CNC machining department has successfully completed a broad spectrum of projects on our lathes and mills, such as industrial pumps, O-ring grooves, internal threads, and anything requiring a high-tolerance area or tight fit.
CNC Lathes
We operate three CNC lathes for turning procedures. Turning is a subtractive machining process that uses a stationary, single-point cutting tool to remove material from a workpiece on a spindle as it rotates. CNC lathes are capable of producing complex components and are ideal for parts that feature symmetry along an axis. On round or cylindrical parts, CNC lathes create accurate threads, slots, and tapers.
What We Do on CNC Lathes for Our Customers
- Custom parts
- Secondary operations on molded parts
- Custom inserts for insert molding
- Turned parts for fixtures and gages
- Custom parts for our presses and equipment
- Parts for mold repairs
CNC Milling
CNC milling machines are very large pieces of equipment that remove material from a workpiece using rotating, multi-point cutting tools. Unlike lathes, milling machines rotate the cutting tool while the workpiece remains stationary. To load materials, CNC mills feature built-in tooling changers and auto-feed mechanics, and they utilize electric sensors to monitor processing for unattended machining. Tech-Way operates eight CNC mills with tool changers, two of which have a 4th axis. This subtractive manufacturing technique can create shallow or deep cavities in a workpiece.
